WHEN PEACE FEELS IMPOSSIBLE: LESSONS FROM THE HEART, MIND, AND SPIRIT

REAL-LIFE STORIES AND TIMELESS WISDOM FOR NAVIGATING INNER CHAOS AND FINDING TRUE CALM
By Jun P. Espina | 07/18/2026 | 1 min read

When Peace Feels Impossible. I knew of someone who had just died recently, over a year after he discovered his beloved wife cheated on him. It is the meaning of Proverbs 14:30. Chaos in the heart is unhealthful and damaging to the body.

He refused to believe in the Scriptures after my three-year weekly Bible study with him. After about 20 years, he asked me about his legal options, since his wife sued him despite her shameless infidelity. All the same, my repeated message that Christ is the Answer for all his troubles never crossed his mind and heart in so far as our last conversion goes. He asked me about legal stuff, despite knowing that my forte is the Bible, not the Court of Law.

King Solomon said that

“A calm and peaceful and tranquil heart is life and health to the body, But passion and envy are like rottenness to the bones.” (Prov. 14:30, AMP)

Someone I knew in my younger years had also met the same pattern of physical deterioration after learning that her daughter was pregnant. She died with signs of mental and cardiovascular distress that had caused her untimely death.

HOW TO BE TRULY CALM AND PEACEFUL?

Outside of Scriptures, we find “neuroplasticity,” which “is the brain’s lifelong ability to reorganize its structure, functions, and connections in response to new experiences, learning, or injury.”

In short, we have the mental capabilities to adapt to or mitigate our challenges.

Bruce Lee’s famous quote seems helpful in this conversation: “Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless, like water. You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”

Be plastic. Be moldable. Be water in your adversities.

If there is one rule I like most aside from scriptural wisdom and remedies, it is this rule: “It’s not yet the end of the world”—in your desperate moments.

WHAT IS LACKING WITH WORLDLY SOLUTIONS TO INNER CHAOS?

Two days after my brother-in-law’s wife died, her brother also died. This event was a situation where the advice to “Keep your calm, brother; it is not the end of the world yet” was ineffective.

Biblically, Bruce Lee’s advice to “be water” and the neuroplasticity approach to managing our emergencies (or maintaining our peace during tragedies) are somewhat complicated.

As stated by the prophet Jeremiah:

“The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it?” (Jer. 17:9)

I asked AI for a list of popular personalities whose deaths are connected with romantic relationships. To illustrate my point, I selected two individuals from the extensive list: Phil Hartman, who was shot by his wife, Brynn Omdahl, in 1998 before she died by suicide, and Maurizio Gucci, who was assassinated in 1995 by a hitman hired by his ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani.

THE HEART IS MORE DECEITFUL THAN ALL ELSE.

THE GOD PRINCIPLE IN OUR LIFE JOURNEY

The person I mentioned in the opening paragraph of this blog is one of the most intelligent friends I have in my life. I knew he tried to adapt and kept his calm. I knew his character after 3 years of Bible study. However, his health deteriorated due to the emotional strain caused by his wife’s attacks on his name and honor.

The Bible says that the heart is beyond pacifying.

A recent study reveals that the heart has a “mini-brain.” You cannot easily subjugate something that has its own “complex nervous system.”

“As of December 2024, a study published in Nature Communications by researchers from Karolinska Institutet and Columbia University reveals that the heart has its own complex nervous system, described as a ‘mini-brain.'”

As I always share the dearest part of my theology, our Lord Jesus has His own peace package or version He is willing to give to us. It is written in John 14:27:

“Peace I leave you, My peace I give you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, nor fearful.”

It is what we need. He is who we need.

    About Jun P. Espina

Jun P. Espina loves nature, music, painting, and poetry, but couldn’t find inner joy during his first 27 years of life. After his father’s death, he taught in college and met religious friends who couldn’t satisfy his search for meaning. In 1984, he was converted to the biblical Christian faith. He married his girlfriend, Virgie, the following year—God blessed them with three children—and served Christ as a believer in different spaces of the Christian ministry. After over 30 years of orthodox Christianity, he wrote a few Christian eBooks in his home in Davao City. Sometimes his four little grandchildren played with their smartphones by his side.
